ASX- and LSE-listed Resolute Mining has announced that CEO Terry Holohan will take a leave of absence from December 13, 2024, until January 31, 2025, following his recent detention in Mali alongside two colleagues. The trio, detained on November 8 during discussions with Malian mining and tax authorities, were released on November 21 after the company agreed to a $247-million settlement with the Malian junta.

ASX-listed Coronado Global Resources on Friday announced the opening of its Mammoth underground mine at the Curragh Mining Complex in Queensland's Bowen basin. The mine, located at the southern end of the Curragh North pit, would be Coronado’s first underground mining venture in Australia.

Canadian miner Agnico Eagle Mines on Thursday announced the acquisition of O3 Mining in a C$1.67-a-share cash transaction, valued at about C$204-million. O3 Mining’s primary asset, the 100%-owned Marban Alliance property in Québec’s Abitibi region, is adjacent to Agnico Eagle’s Canadian Malartic complex. The Marban Alliance includes the Marban deposit, an advanced exploration project with an estimated 52.4-million tonnes of indicated resources grading 1.03 g/t gold (1.7-million ounces) and 1.0-million tonnes of inferred resources grading 0.97 g/t gold (32 000 oz).

Australia’s main opposition group laid out a A$331-billion plan to create a taxpayer-funded nuclear power industry in just over a decade, despite the nation’s top scientists saying renewable energy such as wind and solar energy is more cost effective. The center-right Liberal Party leader Peter Dutton announced the cost of his nuclear policy at a press conference in Brisbane on Friday, making it a major plank of the election platform of his coalition with the National Party before an election due by May.

Globally diversified mining and metals company South32 expects to obtain approval for its Worsley Alumina mine development project – a mine life extension project – from the Western Australia state later this month and federal approval early in 2025. This follows the positive outcome of an appeal of an earlier decision by the Western Australian Environmental Protection Authority (EPA), which recommended that the project be approved, but subject to conditions that South32 said went beyond reasonable measures for managing environmental risks and would create significant operating challenges.

Research association Coaltech has shifted its focus to driving clean coal technologies this year, aiming to significantly reduce emissions from coal mining and combustion of the energy source by promoting clean energy transitions along with exploring alternative uses of coal, says CEO Avhurengwi Nengovhela. Currently, Coaltech is funding several environmental projects centered on nature-based solutions, including rehabilitating mine-impacted land to support vegetation resilience and carbon sequestration, to combat climate change.

Although there are substantial copper operations and project developments under way in South Africa, such as those in the provinces of the Northern Cape and North West, copper industry cluster Copper Development Association Africa (CDAA) says the country does not fully reap the benefits of these endeavours. The association notes that many of these operations can add “upwards of 80 000 t of copper a year” to the local market, but it is unknown how much of this production will actually reach the market.

In its endeavours to develop its Prieska copper/zinc mine (PCZM) and the Okiep copper project (OCP) – both located in the Northern Cape, of South Africa – copper-focused developer Orion Minerals has appointed a project director and consultancy to progress feasibility studies for both projects. As such, international project manager Nick Fouche was appointed in October as PCZM project director to oversee the completion of the feasibility study, while LMMS Consultants was appointed by Orion at the same time, to assist in expediting ongoing optimisation work for this feasibility study.
