Magazine cover image Digitalisation seen as key to bolstering fight against illicit gold trade
Published: 18 Oct 24
The integrity of the global gold supply chain has been the subject of intense scrutiny of late, following a damning report by Swiss nongovernmental organisation SwissAid earlier this year, which claims that illicit gold trade amounts to between $23-billion and $35-billion a year. However, the introduction of technologies such as the geoforensic passport, optical AI and blockchain – along with the updated Responsible Gold Guidelines (RGG), the more stringent Know Your Customer (KYC) Guidelines and the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development’s (OECD’s) Due Diligence Guidance for Responsible Supply Chains of Minerals from Conflict-Affected and High-Risk Areas – means that much of the framework needed to stymie illicit gold trade already exists.

Industrial companies in KwaZulu-Natal are increasingly recognising the importance of water resilience and collaborative efforts to address shared water challenges, especially amid ongoing challenges in the province, owing to ageing water infrastructure and poor maintenance. Many businesses are implementing solutions – such as storing water on site using tanks, drilling boreholes, harvesting rainwater and identifying process efficiencies – to mitigate water supply disruptions, says engineering consultancy SRK Consulting principal environmental scientist Tamaryn Hale.
APP INTEGRATION
The Khanyisa Ops app offers a cost-effective solution by integrating data from existing infrastructure
App offers cost-effective solution
Published: 18 Oct 24
The Khanyisa Ops app – previously known as the WaterLeaks app – offers a cost-effective solution by integrating data from existing infrastructure, such as pump control systems, and combining it with newly collected data to create a comprehensive overview of system conditions. By identifying patterns of recurring faults, the app helps municipalities prioritise infrastructure upgrades and maintenance, ultimately reducing water losses and improving operational efficiency, says water and sanitation solutions provider Khanyisa Projects managing member Karlin Naidoo.
