Laura Tyler Adriatic appoints former BHP exec as MD and CEO

ASX- and LSE-listed Adriatic Metals has appointed Laura Tyler, a former BHP executive, as MD and CEO. This marks a new chapter for the company as it seeks to strengthen its position as a leading mining entity in Europe. Tyler, who joined the Adriatic board as a nonexecutive director on July 1, 2024, stepped in as interim CEO on August 9. Her appointment comes after an extensive search for a new leader.

South African consumers should, in the nearer future, receive some form of subsidy to buy electric vehicles (EVs), as has been the case in most major markets in the world. These subsidies are aimed at assisting car buyers to transition to these cleaner, but still more expensive, vehicles.

TSX- and LSE-listed Centamin increased production at its flagship Sukari mine, in Egypt, by 30% year-on-year to 131 726 oz in the quarter ended September 30, taking output for the nine months to September 30 to 356 465 oz. Gold sales increased by 44% year-on-year to 149 659 oz for the third quarter.

South African manufacturer Malben Engineering, of Nigel, is pioneering the use of green steel in the production of automotive components for leading local original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). The company, which was established in 1974  and has developed into a tier 1 supplier of stampings and welding components including for Ford South Africa, is trialling low-carbon steel produced by Salzgitter, of Germany, as part of the Salzgitter Low Carbon Steelmaking programme.

London-listed mining services company Capital has reported a 17.6% year-on-year increase in revenue to $93.7-million for the third quarter and is maintaining its full-year revenue guidance at between $355-million and $375-million. The company's drilling and associated revenue had increased by 24.8% year-on-year to $63.9-million and its mining revenue by 7.2% year-on-year to $19.3-million.

Industry organisation the Minerals Council South Africa says it is fully committed to supporting the third iteration of health and safety milestones agreed by the Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources, organised labour and the Minerals Council as the industry strives to realise its ambition of zero harm. The first milestones to improve mineworkers’ health and safety in South Africa were agreed by the tripartite Mine Health and Safety Council in 2003 to deliver step-change improvements in the working environment for all people working in the mining industry.
NGEx placement upsized to C$175m

Owing to strong demand, Canadian exploration company NGEx Minerals has upsized its previously announced private placement from C$100-million to C$175-million. The TSX-listed firm will now place about 15.91-million shares at C$11 a share.

Botswana Diamonds, which holds exploration licences in South Africa and Botswana, has obtained a prospecting permit covering five kimberlites known to contain diamonds in the Marsfontein region of South Africa. This permit covers 900.67 ha and surrounds the iconic Marsfontein diamond mine.
ACSA seeks greater air connectivity between the BRICS countries

The Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) is going to use its participation in the 2024 BRICS Business Summit to push for greater air connectivity between the BRICS countries. BRICS is the Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa alignment (not alliance). ACSA is the State-owned company responsible for all but two of South Africa’s international, and most of the major domestic, airports. The BRICS Business Summit includes, ACSA pointed out, an Aviation Working Group. The chairperson for this group was ACSA CEO Mpumi Mpofu. (There is also a Transport and Logistics Working Group.)
DRDGOLD lifts first-quarter output, sales

JSE- and NYSE-listed DRDGOLD’s production for the quarter ended September 30 increased by 7% quarter-on-quarter to 1 319 kg (42 407 oz), primarily owing to a 13% increase in tonnage throughput, despite yield being lower at 0.2 g/t. Gold sold increased by 4% quarter-on-quarter to 1 289 kg (41 442 oz).
