African Rainbow Minerals wants to maximise the equity it has in Harmony Gold

The global market is going through a very challenging time right now, African Rainbow Minerals (ARM) executive chairperson Dr Patrice Motsepe noted on Friday, when the Johannesburg Stock Exchange-listed company reported a 43% fall in headline earnings to R5.1-billion in the 12 months to June 30. “You’ll see from our results that headline earnings, dividends and various other indicators – in line with mining companies all over the world – have come down,” Motsepe outlined, ahead of highlighting the strong performance of Harmony Gold, of which ARM has been an integral part more than two decades.

South African clinic switched to satellite-based connectivity

Three South African companies have partnered to provide low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite-based digital connectivity to a clinic at a mine in a remote rural area in Mpumalanga province. This was the first time that a LEO service has been adopted in the South African healthcare industry. The three enterprises were the satellite and wireless technologies engineering consultancy Q-KON, the ICT group Gijima, and dedicated platinum and chrome mining sector healthcare provider Platinum Health Medical Scheme. The clinic was Platinum Health’s Modikwa clinic, at the Modikwa mine, near Burgersfort.

Metals Focus reports positive contributions from gold miners globally in 2023

Precious metals consultancy Metals Focus finds that combined Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from gold mining companies decreased by 5.4% year-on-year in 2023, amounting to 27 249 kilotonnes of CO2 equivalent emissions.
The survey spanned companies such as Agnico Eagle, AngloGold Ashanti, B2Gold, Barrick Gold Corporation, Endeavour Mining, Gold Fields, Harmony Gold, IAMGOLD, Kinross, Newcrest, Newmont, Northern Star, Poluys and Solidcore Resources.

Macmahon wins mining contract in Indonesia

Australian mining services group Macmahon Holdings has been selected by PT Citra Palu Minerals (CPM) as the mining services contractor for the Poboya gold project, in Sulawesi, Indonesia.
The scope for Macmahon will include opencut mining activities including drilling, loading, hauling, equipment maintenance and mine site development.

Wits’ Themba Maseko doubts embattled Justice Minister will ensure whistleblower protection

University of the Witwatersrand School of Governance head and whistleblower Themba Maseko said he is not confident that newly appointed Minister of Justice Thembi Simelane will be able to move forward with former Chief Justice Raymond Zondo’s proposal on strengthening the protection of whistleblowers, mostly as she is implicated in a scandal of corruption. Simelane met with the Portfolio Committee on Justice and Constitutional Development on Friday, following allegations levelled against her, relating to a VBS Mutual Bank loan. Maseko noted Zondo’s “positive move” in supporting the protection of whistleblowers. “The only unfortunate thing now is that the Minister [Ronald Lamola] who was supposed to do this, is now the Minister of International Affairs. I am not sure if the new Minister [Simelane] will be able to move forward with that proposal, largely as you may know, she is appearing in Parliament today to account for benefiting from the VBS deal or corruption that took place in Limpopo,” he said. Zondo, in his State Capture Inquiry, made recommendations for the establishment of an anti-corruption agency, that should house a division for whistleblowers to provide legal protection, social-psychological and health resources.
